The Auckland Rough Sleepers Initiative is hosting the World Homeless Day Auckland 2018 on October 10, and Lifewise is proud to be a part of the organisations involved.
World Homeless Day is an event with various activities that allow the community to come together in an effort to help raise awareness for homelessness and rough sleepers. Rough sleepers today face many challenges, such as sustainable housing, various health issues, and lack of opportunities in the job market. The goal of the event is to provide these opportunities with the help of various organisations.
World Homeless Day 2018: Ngā Huarahi – Pathways
The theme chosen for this year’s World Homeless Day is Ngā Huarahi – Pathways. Individuals experiencing homelessness may, unfortunately, feel that options are limited. However, the purpose of the event is to show these individuals that there are many different pathways through different services best suited for them.
Auckland Rough Sleepers Initiative represents these different pathways that individuals can take by working with various organisations alongside Lifewise, such as James Liston Hostel Trust, Auckland City Mission, Housing First, Merge Cafe, NZPC, Rainbow Youth, Te Puni Kōkiri – Tamaki Makaurau, St. John Ambulance, Waitemata DHB Mental Health Services, Salvation Army, and Auckland Council.
These organisations offer people experiencing homelessness with various pathways including:
- Sustainable housing
- Nutritious food
- Medical services
- Counselling
- Community connections, and much more
During the event, these organisations will host various activities with the aim to raise awareness about the different pathways available, while also highlighting the challenges homeless individuals are facing globally.
During World Homeless Day Auckland 2018, the community can participate in various activities, including:
- Live music, arts and crafts
- Presentations by the organisations
- Health promotion and mental health awareness.
- Food and drink, including the famous celebrity cook-off!
