Haehaetu Barrett's Speech at the 6th National Housing and Homelessness Forum in Darwin 2024
Lifewise CE Haehaetu Barrett delivered a powerful yet heartfelt speech at the 6th National Housing and Homelessness Forum in Darwin 2024, urging for a collective effort to combat homelessness.
Coming Together for a Common Cause
Haehaetu stressed the importance of collaboration in tackling homelessness, saying, “It’s up to all of us to work together when we’re setting up services or forming partnerships to end homelessness.” Her message emphasised the need for a unified approach, where everyone plays a part in finding solutions. “We need each other so when we face whānau, they can see a united front of support, not a setup”.
Community-Powered Solutions
It really does take a village. Sharing a success story, Haehaetu described a project in Te Arawa where community elders, peers, and locals came together to support those in need. “We brought in elders, peers, and folks who know how to care for each other,” she recalled. This grassroots effort significantly reduced the number of people staying in emergency motels by moving them into stable Housing First accommodations.
Empowering Leadership and Genuine Engagement
Haehaetu also challenged traditional leadership styles, advocating for inclusive leadership that values diverse voices. Her vision included nurturing a compassionate workforce led by bold leaders unafraid to advocate globally and be the voice of those that needed to be heard.
When she asked a street whānau on what they think she should say at the conference, the whānau said, “Believe in us. Just help us to do what we know we can do for others like us”.
Uniting for Real Change and Focusing on Solutions
Central to Haehaetu’s message was the call for agencies and policymakers to authentically engage with affected communities making sure there is consultation and involvement.
“Because we know our communities, we know the people in our communities, we know who to involve in our communities. We know who we are in terms of solutions and let us be focused in that area”.
Wrapping Up with Hope and Unity
In her closing remarks, Haehaetu encouraged unity and kindness.
“Let’s work together. It’s a big mahi. But most importantly, let’s be kind to ourselves and look out for each other.”
