It has been three months since the government introduced a nationwide ban on gang symbols in public places. However, despite these legal restrictions and recent crackdowns, gang activity remains a persistent issue. Many communities continue to witness the economic and social impact of gang operations, particularly along Karangahape Road (more popularly known as K Road).
Michael Cugley of Te Ao Māori News came down to investigate the current state of gang activity along K Road and interviewed our CE, Haehaetu Barrett, and Merge Community Service Lead, Jo Leach. Merge Cafe is a befitting location as it is a well-known safe space for our whānau and the wider community.
The Role of Gangs in Community Support
While gangs are often associated with criminal activities, there is another side to their existence that our community leaders recognise.
“What we see within the gang whānau environment is that they actually provide us with guidance on working with the most hardcore individuals,” said Haehaetu. “They also come to us for help to support their members.” This dual reality makes it difficult to paint all gang members with the same brush. While some of them engage in unlawful activities, we should not dismiss the fact that there are others who strive to support their whānau and communities.
At Merge Cafe, we strive to be a neutral space where all community members can share a meal. Although government initiatives aim to curb gang visibility, illegal activities continue, though less visibly. According to Haehaetu, “We all know there is a high level of risk in some gang-related activities, but we also recognise that older, more mature gang leaders are focused on whānau and whānau ora.”
Merge has been and will always be a place for everyone, even those who are living in recluse and those who may feel left out by society. Thus, as part of the Merge community, we will continue to support anyone who needs our help.

Karangahape Road: A Changing Landscape
Once known as a popular nightlife hub, Karangahape Road has undergone significant changes over the years. Rising living costs, increased unemployment, and financial constraints have altered the dynamics of the area. Despite these challenges, there are ongoing efforts to restore K-road’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive space. Jo Leach is eager to revitalise the area’s unique culture. “It’s known as the street where people can be themselves, and generally, people on K’road are friendly and welcoming,” said Leach.. “I think it really is the heart of Auckland City, and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.”
While government policies continue to target gangs, the broader social and economic issues affecting the community must also be addressed. Finding a balance between law enforcement and community support is key to ensuring a safer and more inclusive Auckland for everyone.
